Where Does Konsole Store Profiles and Settings?

Konsole splits settings between konsolerc and a profiles folder. The exact Linux paths and which file holds what.

Last updated

Konsole keeps general settings in ~/.config/konsolerc. That file records things like tab bar position and which profile is the default. Window geometry on fresh installs may live in the state file under ~/.local/share/konsole instead, a split the KDE team made deliberately.

Profiles themselves live as .profile files in ~/.local/share/konsole, next to color schemes. Each profile is plain text, so version controlling that folder backs up fonts, schemes, and keybindings. Edit a profile file while Konsole is closed to avoid it overwriting your change.

Where Konsole stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/konsolerc

Main settings file. Profile definitions and color schemes sit beside it conceptually in ~/.local/share/konsole. Newer builds keep window state in ~/.local/share/konsole/konsolestaterc rather than here.

Frequently asked questions

how do i back up my konsole profiles

Copy the whole ~/.local/share/konsole folder plus ~/.config/konsolerc. The first holds profiles and color schemes, the second holds which profile is default and general options. Restore both with Konsole closed.

where is the default konsole profile set

In ~/.config/konsolerc under the DefaultProfile key. It names one of the .profile files in ~/.local/share/konsole. Change it in Settings, then Profile Management, rather than editing the file when possible.
