Where Does Yakuake Store Config and Sessions?

Where Yakuake keeps its yakuakerc settings file and saved session layouts on Linux with KDE Plasma.

Last updated

Yakuake keeps its own settings in ~/.config/yakuakerc while borrowing shells, colors, and fonts from Konsole profiles. Session layouts persist as profile files under the same config tree.

That borrowing explains half of all Yakuake mysteries. A wrong font or broken shell is a Konsole profile problem wearing a Yakuake mask. Reset yakuakerc for dropdown behavior, and open Konsole settings for everything the terminal actually renders. D-Bus scripts tab operations beyond the GUI.

Where Yakuake stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/yakuakerc

yakuakerc plus session/ profiles here. Honors $XDG_CONFIG_HOME. Konsole profiles in ~/.local/share/konsole supply the shells and schemes, so back up both trees for a full migration.

Frequently asked questions

where is the yakuake config file

In ~/.config/yakuakerc (general behavior, shortcuts, appearance). Session layouts live in session/ profiles nearby. Copy both with Yakuake closed to migrate. Deleting yakuakerc resets the dropdown without touching Konsole profiles it borrows.

where are yakuake sessions stored

As session profile files under the config tree, storing tab layouts and working directories. Save them from the session menu before migrating; unsaved layouts die with the process. Konsole bookmark files back the profile contents.

where are yakuake color schemes stored

In Konsole's own profiles (~/.local/share/konsole), which Yakuake borrows for shells, colors, and fonts. Edit them in Konsole settings; Yakuake reflects the changes. A broken Yakuake theme is usually a Konsole profile issue.
