Where Does KTorrent Store Settings and State?

KTorrent follows KDE config homes: ktorrentrc plus app data under XDG dirs. Old installs used ~/.kde instead.

Last updated

KTorrent follows KDE conventions: ktorrentrc with connection, speed, plugin, and UI settings plus an app-data dir with torrent state, RSS, and search plugins. Modern installs live under ~/.config and ~/.local/share; KDE4-era guides point at ~/.kde/share instead. Daemon mode and web UI plugin (default 8080) read the same files.

Kill the client before hand edits; running instances rewrite on exit and eat changes. Downloads default wherever configured (not the config tree), so backup scope is settings plus state, not content. Plugin toggles persist in the rc; a missing plugin on restore disables cleanly rather than erroring.

Where KTorrent stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/ktorrentrc

Connection, speeds, plugins, UI state. Close the app before editing; it rewrites on exit. KDE4 ~/.kde paths are legacy; Plasma uses XDG. Downloads live outside this tree.

Frequently asked questions

how do i migrate ktorrent to a new machine

Copy ktorrentrc plus the KTorrent app-data dir (torrent state, plugins, search engines) with the app closed. Downloads stay wherever configured. Restore to the same XDG paths; version jumps migrate on first start.

why do guides disagree on the ktorrent path

KDE4-era path. Modern Plasma builds use ~/.config/ktorrentrc with data in ~/.local/share/ktorrent. Guides quoting ~/.kde predate Plasma 5; translate them to XDG before following.
