Where Does Lakka Store ROMs and Saves?

Lakka keeps ROMs, saves and playlists on the storage partition at /storage. The tree and what survives updates.

Last updated

Lakka funnels everything personal through /storage. ROMs per system, savefiles, save states, screenshots and the RetroArch config all branch from there. Boot files sit apart on the system side.

The whole storage tree shares over the network by default. Updates replace the system side only, so ROMs and saves persist. Deleting the RetroArch config inside .config amounts to a settings reset.

Where Lakka stores this, by platform

Linux
/storage/roms

ROMs per system with savefiles and savestates as siblings. Browse it over the network share or SSH. Survives updates intact.

Linux
/storage/savefiles

Battery saves and save states trees. Back these up with roms. Core and input overrides live in the .config/retroarch sibling folder.

Frequently asked questions

How do I migrate Lakka to new hardware?

Copy roms, savefiles, savestates and config from /storage to the new install after its first boot. The layout ports across Lakka versions. Keep core overrides in .config when moving between device types.

Scans find nothing on my fresh card. Why?

Boot once first. The storage tree is created on first boot, so unbooted cards look empty. Thumbnails and playlists generate on scan, which needs the ROMs present first.
