Where Does LaunchBox Store Its Library and Media?

LaunchBox is portable: library XMLs, media and emulators all live under its install folder. Layout, backups and moving a build.

Last updated

LaunchBox keeps everything relative to its own install folder. Library records and settings are XML files under Data, games default under Games, artwork under Images, and the last 25 Data backups under Backups. Copy the whole folder to a new PC and the build just works.

The official backup (Tools > File Management > Create Data Backup) covers Data only, never ROMs, media or emulators. Plan the full set yourself. Keep the install on a local SSD and point platform folders at a NAS only for bulk ROM storage. Never let two PCs write to one shared install.

Where LaunchBox stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Games\LaunchBox\Data

Library XMLs per platform plus settings. The example root assumes an install at C:\Games\LaunchBox; yours is wherever the installer put it. Everything else (Games, Images, Backups, Updates) hangs off the same root.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move LaunchBox to a new computer?

Close LaunchBox and all emulators, then copy the entire install folder, not just Data. Anything referenced outside it (external ROMs, AppData emulator configs, BIOS files) must move separately with identical paths.

What should I back up in LaunchBox?

At minimum the Data folder plus custom themes and plugins. For full recovery add Images, Videos, Manuals, ROMs, emulators with BIOS and firmware, and saves. The built-in backup handles Data and settings only.
