Where Is the LibreOffice User Profile?
LibreOffice user profile paths on Windows, macOS and Linux, and how to reset the profile when LibreOffice keeps crashing.
Last updated
LibreOffice keeps templates, macros, autocorrect entries, extension settings and UI tweaks in a user profile folder versioned by major release, currently the 4/user tree. Documents are never stored there, only your customization layer.
A corrupt profile causes most mysterious startup crashes. Reinstalling rarely helps because the profile survives. Rename the user folder and restart. LibreOffice builds a clean one and you can migrate pieces back. Back up the folder first if macros matter to you.
Where LibreOffice stores this, by platform
%appdata%\LibreOffice\4\user
Paste into the Explorer address bar. Close all LibreOffice windows including Quickstarter before renaming, or files will be locked.
~/Library/Application Support/LibreOffice/4/user
Use Go > Go to Folder in Finder. Back up gallery and template subfolders first if you customized them heavily.
~/.config/libreoffice/4/user
Same structure as other platforms. You can also trigger a reset from Help > Restart in Safe Mode if LibreOffice still opens.
Frequently asked questions
Will I lose documents if I reset my LibreOffice profile?
No. Documents live where you saved them. Resetting only clears settings, macros, templates and extension data. Back up the user folder first if those customizations matter to you.
Where are LibreOffice backup files?
Check Tools > Options > Paths for the Backups location. Crash recovery copies land there, separate from the profile. Look there first after an unexpected shutdown.
