Where Is the LightDM Config File?

LightDM reads lightdm.conf in /etc/lightdm, with drop-in snippets in conf.d overriding it.

Last updated

LightDM configures the graphical login from /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf. The [Seat:*] section picks the greeter and session, while user switching rules sit nearby. Drop-in files in conf.d override the main file without edits.

Greeters keep their own configs beside it, such as slick-greeter.conf for appearance. Autologin settings live in the seat section and need the user in the right group. Check journal logs for the display manager when the greeter loops.

Where LightDM stores this, by platform

Linux
/etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf

Main config with seat defaults. Drop-ins in /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d win over it. Greeter themes configure in their own nearby files.

Frequently asked questions

How do I change the LightDM greeter?

Set greeter-session in the seat section to the installed greeter name. Install the greeter package first or login breaks. Keep a TTY handy when testing new greeters.

Where does LightDM log failures?

Through the system journal under the display-manager service, plus per seat logs in /var/log/lightdm. Read both when the greeter loops back. Seat logs name the failing component.
