Where Are LIMBO Save Files Located?
Where LIMBO keeps savegame.txt on Windows, Mac and Linux, and how Steam Cloud changes the reset steps.
Last updated
LIMBO keeps progress in a single savegame.txt file. The Steam build syncs it through userdata for AppID 48000. The DRM free build keeps it next to the game install instead.
Mac and Linux use native app data paths rather than Proton prefixes. Linux in particular uses a case sensitive PlayDead folder. Disable Steam Cloud before deleting anything, or the old save returns on next launch. The DRM free builds ignore userdata entirely, so confirm your edition before digging through Steam folders. Copy it whole.
Where LIMBO stores this, by platform
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\[SteamID]\48000\remote
Cloud synced savegame.txt for AppID 48000. The numeric folder is your Steam ID. DRM free builds instead use a save_game folder next to the game.
~/Library/Application Support/Limbo/save_game
Holds the save_game folder with savegame.txt. Use Go to Folder in Finder since Library is hidden. Settings sit in the same parent.
~/.local/share/PlayDead/Limbo
Native Linux path, not a Proton prefix. Folder name casing matters: capital P and D in PlayDead. Holds saves and config together.
Frequently asked questions
How do I reset LIMBO progress on Steam?
Delete savegame.txt with Steam Cloud disabled, then launch once to generate a fresh file. Cloud sync restores the deleted file otherwise, so keep it off until the new game starts. The DRM free build keeps the file next to the game instead.
I cannot find the LIMBO save folder on Windows. Where is it?
Paste the userdata remote path for AppID 48000 into Explorer. The numeric middle folder is your Steam account ID. Non Steam builds keep save_game beside the install folder rather than in userdata.
