Where Does Locus Map Store Offline Maps?

Locus Map keeps maps in Android media folders with private data beside them. Classic vs 4.x paths and SD cards.

Last updated

Locus Map splits storage between two Android trees. Private app data sits in Android/data under the package name, while bulky maps sit in Android/media in Maps and MapsVector folders. Classic (Pro) and 4.x use sibling package names, so both can coexist with separate trees.

Android 11 ended the old root-level Locus folder. Imports now flow through the app rather than manual copies into shared storage. Backups are the exception: those files may live anywhere you choose. SD card variants mirror the same structure under the card ID.

Where Locus Map stores this, by platform

Android
/storage/emulated/0/Android/media/menion.android.locus/Maps

Vector maps in the MapsVector sibling. Private data in Android/data/menion.android.locus/files/Locus. Classic uses menion.android.locus.pro in both trees. SD cards mirror under /storage/XXXX-XXXX with the same tails. Import through the app on Android 11 and later.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I put downloaded map files manually?

Prefer in-app import, which places files correctly on modern Android. Manual drops go to the Maps or MapsVector folder matching your edition under Android/media. Classic and 4.x trees differ by the .pro suffix, so match the running app.

Can Classic and Locus 4 share maps?

No. Scoped storage keeps their trees apart by package name, and sharing one directory breaks on Android 11 and later. Keep both copies or migrate fully. Backups export and import across editions cleanly.

How do I back up Locus Map properly?

Use the in-app backup to a file you place yourself, covering tracks, points and settings. Map files themselves re-download faster than they restore. Keep the backup outside the app trees so reinstalls cannot sweep it away.
