Where Does Lunacy Keep Documents and App Data?

Lunacy stores local .sketch files wherever you save them, with backups and logs in app data. Locations on Windows, macOS and Linux.

Last updated

Lunacy draws a hard line between two kinds of documents. Local .sketch files live wherever you saved them and work fully offline. Cloud documents live on Icons8 servers and need a connection. Only the local ones can vanish into app-data folders.

For recovery, skip the file manager and use Help > Open App Data Folder from inside Lunacy. The Documents folder there holds dated subfolders of everything you worked on, including unsaved temp files. Sort by Date modified, drag a candidate onto the canvas, and save it as a proper .sketch file once recognized.

Where Lunacy stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Local\Icons8\Lunacy

Documents, Cache, Fonts and Logs subfolders. Logs here is what support wants after a crash. Cloud documents never touch this folder, so check version history for those instead.

macOS
~/Library/Containers/com.icons8.Lunacy

Sandboxed equivalent of the Windows folder. The exact subpath can differ by install source, so Help > Open App Data Folder is the reliable route rather than typing this by hand.

Linux
~/.local/share/Icons8/Lunacy

Same Documents and Cache layout as Windows. Flatpak installs mirror it under ~/.var/app/com.icons8.Lunacy/.local/share/Icons8/Lunacy, so check there if the main path is empty.

Frequently asked questions

How do I recover an unsaved Lunacy document?

Choose Help > Open App Data Folder, open Documents, and sort by Date modified. Drag the newest folders onto the canvas one by one. For .lunTempFileSave files, change the extension to .sketch and open normally.

Where are my Lunacy cloud documents stored?

On Icons8 servers, not on your disk. Open them from the Home tab's My Cloud section. To keep a local copy, open a version and use File > Save to store it as a .sketch file anywhere you like.
