Where Does Lutris Store Library and Configs?

Lutris files game configs as YAML plus a SQLite library database, split across config and data homes.

Last updated

Lutris documents its layout in the project README with unusual candor. Game specific YAML files live in the config home, the pga.db library database plus runners and banners in the data home. Neither location needs hand editing.

The database is the irreplaceable piece: reinstalls regenerate configs but not the library's memory of where everything lives. Forum wisdom says copy both trees plus game folders, then fix absolute paths. Banners and cover art moved into the data tree for the same safety.

Where Lutris stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/lutris/games/

Per game YAML configs live here. System config is system.yml beside them. Copy with Lutris closed.

Linux
~/.local/share/lutris/

The pga.db library database plus runners and banners live here. This is the irreplaceable half of any backup.

Frequently asked questions

How do I migrate to a new machine?

Copy ~/.config/lutris and ~/.local/share/lutris with Lutris closed, plus the actual game folders. The database references absolute prefix paths, so keep usernames and mount points identical or relink afterward.

Where are the actual Wine prefixes?

Prefixes default under ~/Games per game. Runners live in the share tree, game YAML in the config tree, and pga.db ties them together. Moving a prefix means updating its game YAML to the new path.
