Where Does Mackup Store Config and Backups?
Mackup reads .mackup.cfg in your home folder. Backed up app configs land in a Mackup folder inside cloud storage.
Last updated
Mackup has two locations that matter. The .mackup.cfg file in your home folder picks the storage engine and which apps sync. The Mackup folder inside that storage holds the actual backed up configs, one file per app.
Custom app definitions extend it further. Files in the applications folder describe extra apps in the same INI format as the built ins. The lookup prefers your home folder copy, then the XDG config path, so overrides never touch the install. Run mackup list to see every app it currently covers.
Where Mackup stores this, by platform
/Users/<username>/.mackup.cfg
Main config: storage engine plus sync and ignore lists. Overridable with the config file flag or env var.
/Users/<username>/Dropbox/Mackup
Backed up configs on Dropbox storage. The folder name follows your storage choice. Restore with mackup restore on a fresh machine.
/home/<username>/.mackup.cfg
Same home folder layout on Linux. Custom per app configs go in the applications subfolder beside it.
Frequently asked questions
How do I set up Mackup?
Create .mackup.cfg in your home folder with a storage section pointing at Dropbox, iCloud, or any folder. Run mackup backup to test it.
Mackup does not support my app. Can I add it?
Drop a cfg file in the applications folder naming the app and its files. Yours override the built ins, so stock mistakes are fixable locally.
