Where Does the ownCloud Client Store Config?

The ownCloud client keeps owncloud.cfg in ~/.config/ownCloud on Linux and AppData on Windows.

Last updated

The ownCloud desktop client stores accounts, folder sync pairs, and exclusions in owncloud.cfg under its per OS config folder. Synced files live in the local folders you chose, apart from config.

Back up the cfg to migrate sync pairs quickly. Passwords come from the login keyring separately. Reconnect each account once on the new machine and let discovery finish before editing pairs.

Where ownCloud stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Users\[You]\AppData\Roaming\ownCloud

owncloud.cfg plus sync logs. Copy with the client quit. Credentials come from Windows Credential Manager.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/ownCloud

Same layout. Library is hidden in Finder. Keychain supplies passwords after migration.

Linux
~/.config/ownCloud

owncloud.cfg under XDG config. Fix ownership after copies. Sync folders restore to matching local paths.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move ownCloud sync pairs?

Copy owncloud.cfg to the matching OS path and recreate local folders first. Launch, reconnect accounts, and let folder discovery complete.

Where are ownCloud passwords stored?

In the OS keychain or wallet, not beside the cfg. Re-enter them once after migration. The cfg alone never authenticates.
