The Mac photo library is a single bundle at ~/Pictures/Photos Library.photoslibrary. It looks like one file in Finder but behaves like a folder: database, thumbnails, edits and originals all packed together. Copying that bundle copies your entire library.
The rule is simple and absolute. Never move files inside the bundle by hand; manage everything through the Photos app. Manual edits orphan database entries, which surfaces weeks later as missing thumbnails. Hold Option while launching Photos to switch between libraries instead.

A bundle, not a file: right-click > Show Package Contents to peek inside. Originals sit in originals/. To relocate, quit Photos, move the bundle in Finder, double-click it once at the new spot, and confirm it opens.

Where are the actual photo files inside the library?
Inside the bundle at originals/ (older libraries use Masters/). Right-click the library, choose Show Package Contents, and browse by year and month folders. Copy files out rather than moving them, and never rename anything in place.
Can I move my Photos library to an external drive?
Yes, but format the drive APFS and let Photos set it as the System Photo Library (needed for iCloud sync). Keep the drive connected during imports, and keep backups: a library split across a missing disk reads as an empty app.
