Where Is the Trash Folder on Mac?
Your Mac's Trash is a hidden .Trash folder in your home directory, with every external drive keeping a separate one.
Last updated
The Trash is one folder per volume wearing a single icon. Your startup disk uses ~/.Trash in your home folder. Each external drive keeps its own /.Trashes folder with a subfolder per user ID.
That split explains the classic full USB stick. Files you trashed from the stick still occupy it until you empty the Trash with the drive attached. Emptying Trash in Finder clears every connected volume in one pass.
Where macOS stores this, by platform
~/.Trash
Open it in Finder with Shift+Command+G and the path above. External drives use /.Trashes/501 at their root, where 501 is usually the first user account.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my USB stick still full after deleting files?
Deleting only moved them to the stick's own Trash. Empty the Trash while the stick stays plugged in and the space returns immediately.
A file refuses to delete. What helps?
Quit the app holding it open, then empty again. Files removed through Terminal skip Finder's tracking, so Put Back may not be offered for those.
