Where Does Mageia Store Packages and Repo Config?

Mageia caches downloaded RPMs under /var/cache/urpmi and records repository media in /etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg, managed through urpmi and the Mageia Control Center.

Last updated

Mageia inherits urpmi from Mandriva, so its layout differs from dnf and zypper distros. Downloaded RPMs stage under /var/cache/urpmi. Repository definitions live in /etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg rather than a .d folder of separate files.

The Control Center wraps both locations in a GUI for software sources and updates. Terminal users get urpmi, urpme, and urpmq against the same config. Either way, these two paths are where package storage questions end up.

Where Mageia stores this, by platform

Linux
/var/cache/urpmi

Staged RPMs from installs and updates. Safe to clear when space runs short. Check size before deciding it is the culprit.

Linux
/etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg

Repository media definitions for urpmi. Inspect when updates fail on a specific source. The Control Center edits this file graphically.

Frequently asked questions

How do I update Mageia repositories?

Run urpmi.update -a to refresh every configured medium, or open the Mageia Control Center software sources tool. Check /etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg to see which mirrors are active. A failing update usually traces to one dead mirror in that file.

Where does urpmi cache downloads?

Clear /var/cache/urpmi to reclaim the space, since cached RPMs only speed up reinstalls. Check du -sh on the folder first. Partial downloads from interrupted updates sit in the same tree and clear the same way.
