Where Does Marble Store Maps and Settings?

Marble keeps map cache, bookmarks and view settings under XDG paths on Linux. Config file and cache roots.

Last updated

Marble splits preferences from map data. Bookmarks, plugins and view options live in a small marblerc file. Downloaded tiles and route cache sit under the local share tree.

That split keeps backups light. The config file ports everywhere while tiles refill from servers. Offline workflows need explicit packs, since the tile cache alone does not roam.

Where Marble stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/marble/marblerc

Bookmarks, plugins and view options in one file. Tile downloads live in the share tree below. Copy with Marble quit for a consistent snapshot.

Linux
~/.local/share/marble

Downloaded tiles and route cache. Safe to clear for disk space with Marble quit. Bookmarks stay in marblerc above, so wipes never lose places.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move Marble settings?

Copy marblerc plus the marble cache tree with Marble quit. Bookmarks, plugins and view options travel with the config while downloaded tiles refill on demand. Offline map packs need their own export from inside Marble.

Where are downloaded maps?

In the marble cache tree under local share, sorted per map theme. Clearing it only drops downloaded tiles while bookmarks and settings stay in the config file. Offline regions keep separate packs outside the tile cache.
