Where Does mcabber Store Config and Logs?

mcabber reads mcabberrc from ~/.mcabber, XDG config or legacy dotfile, with chat history under histo/. Override with -f.

Last updated

mcabber resolves its config in order: ~/.mcabber/mcabberrc, then the XDG config variant, then legacy ~/.mcabberrc, with -f forcing any path. Accounts, colors, OTR policy and modules all live there.

History defaults beside it under histo/ when logging is on. The roster, buffers and keybindings are runtime state, so the durable backup is just the rc file plus the history tree.

Where mcabber stores this, by platform

macOS
~/.mcabber/mcabberrc

Accounts, OTR/PGP, colors, modules. History in histo/ when enabled. Edit offline; /source can pull extra rc snippets at runtime.

Linux
~/.mcabber/mcabberrc

Same chain. Sample rc ships with the source; copy before editing so package upgrades never overwrite your live config.

Frequently asked questions

How do I configure mcabber the first time?

Copy the sample mcabberrc and set jid, password and ssl options. mcabber refuses to start without a config file, so there is no interactive first-run wizard.

Where do chat logs go?

Enable history in mcabberrc; logs land per-contact under ~/.mcabber/histo/. OTR and PGP settings ride in the same file, so one backup covers identity and memory.
