Where Does MediaInfo Store Settings?
Installed MediaInfo keeps MediaInfo.cfg beside the program, while portable copies and UAC redirects complicate the picture.
Last updated
Classic MediaInfo writes its options to a file called MediaInfo.cfg sitting in a Plugin subfolder next to the executable. Change a view setting and that is where it lands. Simple, until Windows security gets involved.
On modern Windows the Program Files tree is protected, so a non-elevated MediaInfo can end up writing to a VirtualStore shadow copy instead. Two copies of the file then exist and edits seem to vanish. Setting write permission on the file once, or switching to the portable build, dodges the problem.
Where MediaInfo stores this, by platform
<install dir>\MediaInfo\Plugin\MediaInfo.cfg
Default for the installed GUI build. If your settings refuse to stick, check the shadow copy at %LOCALAPPDATA%\VirtualStore\Program Files\MediaInfo\Plugin\MediaInfo.cfg. That duplicate is the one Windows actually wrote. Portable builds keep the cfg beside their own exe instead.
Frequently asked questions
Why does MediaInfo forget my settings on Windows?
You are likely editing the copy in Program Files while Windows writes to the VirtualStore shadow instead. Open the VirtualStore path above and edit that file, or grant your user write permission on MediaInfo.cfg once. The portable build avoids the whole mess.
How do I carry MediaInfo settings to another PC?
Copy MediaInfo.cfg from the Plugin folder beside the exe. Drop it into the same relative spot on the new machine. Anything version specific, like custom templates, travels inside that one file.
