Where Does VSCodium Store Settings and Extensions?

VSCodium's User settings folder per OS and where its extensions live instead of VS Code's.

Last updated

VSCodium mirrors VS Code paths with Codium names swapped in. Settings and keybindings sit in a User folder under a VSCodium root per OS, while extensions default to a separate .vscode-oss directory in your home.

That split is why extensions do not follow automatically when you copy settings from Code. Migrate settings.json and keybindings.json first, then copy or reinstall extensions as a second step.

Where VSCodium stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\VSCodium\User

settings.json and keybindings.json live here. Extensions default to %USERPROFILE%\.vscode-oss\extensions. product.json for marketplace tweaks sits one level up in %APPDATA%\VSCodium.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/VSCodium/User

Same User contents. Extensions in ~/.vscode-oss/extensions. Portable mode instead uses a codium-portable-data folder beside the app.

Linux
~/.config/VSCodium/User

Settings root under $XDG_CONFIG_HOME or ~/.config. Extensions in ~/.vscode-oss/extensions. Copy both trees to clone an install between machines.

Frequently asked questions

Why are my VS Code extensions missing in VSCodium?

Code uses ~/.vscode/extensions while VSCodium uses ~/.vscode-oss/extensions. Copy the extension folders across or run codium --install-extension for each name from code --list-extensions.

Where is product.json for marketplace fixes?

In the VSCodium root: %APPDATA%/VSCodium on Windows, ~/Library/Application Support/VSCodium on Mac, ~/.config/VSCodium on Linux.
