Where Are Medieval II Total War Save Files Located?

Medieval II keeps campaign saves in the install tree, with VirtualStore ghosts plus full mod splits.

Last updated

Medieval II stores saves in a saves folder inside the install directory, with medieval2.preference.cfg config at the root and mod campaigns under mods. Steam Cloud syncs the tree, and Linux Feral builds use an XDG path instead.

Vista-era installs ghost writes into VirtualStore, splitting saves between two trees by elevation. Mods complicate further: each Kingdoms campaign saves inside its own mod folder. Copy the install saves plus active mod folders with the game closed. Steam Cloud covers the stock tree; modded campaigns need manual copies every time.

Where Medieval II: Total War stores this, by platform

Windows
<install>\saves

Base saves in the install tree with config at the root. VirtualStore shadows split Program Files installs. Kingdoms campaigns save inside their mod folders. Cloud syncs the stock tree.

Linux
~/.local/share/feral-interactive/Medieval II Total War/VFS/Local/saves

Feral Linux builds keep saves under the XDG data root instead of the install tree. Same mod-folder rule applies for Kingdoms campaigns.

Frequently asked questions

My Medieval II saves are not in the install folder. Where are they?

Check the VirtualStore shadow first. Program Files installs redirect writes there, so two save sets can exist. Standardize on one install outside Program Files and merge the folders.

Where are Kingdoms expansion saves?

Kingdoms campaigns keep saves inside their mod folder, not the base saves tree. Back up the mod folder matching the campaign; base-game copies never include them.
