Where Are Shogun 2 Total War Save Files Located?

Shogun 2 keeps campaign saves in a hidden AppData tree that new players almost never find by themselves.

Last updated

Shogun 2 stores saves in %APPDATA%\The Creative Assembly\Shogun2\save_games, with a save_games_multiplayer sibling and preferences beside them. The tree is hidden by default, which generates most of the where-are-my-saves threads.

Multiplayer and campaign saves stay separated, so pruning one never touches the other. In-game multi-select with Ctrl and Shift clears piles faster than Explorer. Copy the Shogun2 folder whole with the game closed; Feral Mac and Linux ports keep their own mirrored trees.

Campaign and multiplayer saves plus preferences in one hidden tree. Multi-select in-game for pruning. Feral ports mirror the layout on Mac and Linux; copy whole with the game closed.

Frequently asked questions

How do I back up Shogun 2 fully?

Copy the whole Shogun2 AppData folder. Campaign saves, multiplayer saves and preferences share it, so partial copies strand settings without progress. Sort by date to prune the pile first.

I cannot find AppData at all. How do I open it?

Type %appdata% into Explorer or Run and press Enter. The folder is hidden by default, which is why search-by-clicking never finds it. The Creative Assembly folder sits right inside.
