Where Does MilkyTracker Save Modules and Config?
MilkyTracker saves .xm and .mod files where you choose, with config in AppData or ~/.config on desktop.
Last updated
MilkyTracker does not impose a song folder. The Disk Op panel saves modules, instruments (.xi), and samples to whatever folder you browse to. Each file type remembers its own last folder, which speeds up repeat saves once you settle on a layout.
Config is separate and small. Windows keeps it in AppData under MilkyTracker. Linux and macOS use ~/.config/milkytracker. Delete that folder if the UI looks broken after an update.
Where MilkyTracker stores this, by platform
User chosen folder for .xm and .mod
Save from Disk Op panel. Config is in AppData\MilkyTracker. Back up songs, not config, when moving machines. WAV export uses the same save dialog.
~/Documents (user chosen songs)
Modules go where you save them. Config is at ~/.config/milkytracker. Right click Open on first launch to pass Gatekeeper for unsigned builds.
User chosen folder for .xm and .mod
Config at ~/.config/milkytracker. AppImage and repo builds share that spot. Keep instruments and samples beside songs for easy archiving.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the MilkyTracker config file?
Windows stores it in AppData under MilkyTracker, Linux and macOS under ~/.config/milkytracker. Remove it to reset preferences. Your songs are elsewhere, so they stay safe.
How should I archive a MilkyTracker song?
Keep the .xm or .mod plus any external .xi instruments and samples in one folder. MilkyTracker can embed most material, but external files get lost if you copy only the module.
