Where Does Modoboa Store Mail and Config?

Modoboa installer paths and Docker volumes on Linux for mail, database and settings.

Last updated

Modoboa manages Postfix and Dovecot on top of a database. Installer setups use /srv/modoboa plus /etc, while Docker uses named volumes.

Mail itself lives in Dovecot Maildirs, usually /var/vmail. Settings live in modoboa settings plus the database. Back up all three or restores miss accounts.

Where Modoboa stores this, by platform

Linux
/srv/modoboa/

Installer home (code, settings, media). Mail store is usually /var/vmail/<domain>/<user>/. Database holds domains and quotas. Docker setups map these into volumes; inspect compose file for exact names.

Frequently asked questions

Where is Modoboa mail stored?

In Dovecot Maildirs under /var/vmail by default. The web UI only manages them. Copy mail plus the database together, or users return without messages.

Which Modoboa files do I back up?

The database dump, /srv/modoboa settings and media, plus /var/vmail. TLS certs and Postfix maps sit nearby. Test restores on a spare VM before upgrades.
