Where Does Molly Store Backups and Data?
Molly encrypts its Signal database on device and writes passphrase protected backups to a Molly folder on shared storage.
Last updated
Molly is the hardened Signal fork for Android: same protocol, plus database encryption at rest and backup passphrases. Messages live in the encrypted app database. Portable copies live in backup files on shared storage.
Backups only exist if you enable them and set a passphrase. Without that step there is nothing to restore, encrypted or otherwise. Confirm the Molly folder in your own storage after the first backup runs, since folder naming can shift between releases.
Where Molly stores this, by platform
/storage/emulated/0/Android/data/mobi.molly.app
Encrypted message database and keys under the Molly package. Copying this folder by hand achieves nothing without the passphrase, so use the in app backup and restore flow.
/storage/emulated/0/Molly
Passphrase protected backup files land here once backups are enabled. Move them off the phone promptly. No passphrase means no restore, so store it somewhere boring and safe.
Frequently asked questions
How do I back up Molly and move phones?
Turn on backups inside Molly settings with a passphrase, copy the resulting files off the phone, and keep the passphrase apart from them. Restore by installing Molly, choosing restore, and entering the same passphrase.
Are Molly backups encrypted too?
Yes. Molly encrypts the database at rest with your passphrase, unlike stock Signal. The backup files use the same passphrase, so losing it locks you out permanently.
Can I restore a Signal backup directly into Molly?
No. Molly and Signal use different packages and folders, so installing one never touches the other. Link Molly as a new device or restore from a Molly backup instead.
