Where Does MultiMC Store Instances?
Where MultiMC keeps instances, icons, and Java settings in its portable data folder.

MultiMC is portable: everything lives next to the binary in an instances/ folder plus a shared libraries tree. There is no registry or AppData split to memorize.
That makes migration a folder copy and corruption easy to reason about. One broken instance never touches its neighbors. Prism Launcher inherits the same layout, so skills transfer directly between the two.

Where should I install MultiMC?
Put the MultiMC files in their own folder outside Program Files and cloud drives, then run from there. Instances, configs, and downloaded libraries grow beside the binary. Move the whole folder to relocate everything.

Each instance folder holds its own .minecraft (saves, mods, configs), instance.cfg, and patches. Copy the instance folder to back it up. The global multimc.cfg beside instances/ holds Java paths and UI state.
