Where Does the CurseForge App Store Minecraft Instances?
Where the CurseForge app creates its Minecraft modding folder and instances on each desktop OS.
Last updated
The CurseForge app builds its own Minecraft environment inside a modding folder, defaulting to ~/curseforge/minecraft style paths per OS. Mods, modpacks, and loader versions all live underneath it.
Choose Standard setup unless you have a reason. Custom roots help styore libraries on bigger drives. Either way the app manages Java and dependencies itself, so the folder stays the single thing to back up.
Where CurseForge App stores this, by platform
C:\Users\[Your-Name]\curseforge\minecraft\
Default modding root with minecraft/Instances underneath (mods, saves, loader per instance). Advanced setup can relocate it; future installs follow the new root.
~/Documents/curseforge/minecraft/
Same Instances layout under Documents. Open via Go to Folder. Exact path follows the Standard or Advanced choice made at setup.
~/Documents/curseforge/minecraft/
Same layout under home Documents. Overwolf and standalone builds share this convention; check app settings for a custom root.
Frequently asked questions
Where should the modding folder live?
Pick Standard during setup for the default paths below, or Advanced for a custom root. The app builds a full game install inside that folder, so no prior Minecraft install is needed. Changing it later moves future installs only.
Where are instances and saves inside it?
Each instance keeps its own mods, saves, and loader version under Instances inside the modding folder. Launch from the app (with or without the Mojang launcher per settings). Copy the instance folder to back it up.
