Where Does Natron Store Settings and Plugins?
Natron settings and plugin paths on Windows, macOS and Linux, following Qt conventions per OS.
Last updated
Natron follows Qt settings convention on each OS: roaming AppData on Windows, Application Support on Mac, .config on Linux. Node presets, layouts and plugin paths live inside. Projects (.ntp) reference media rather than embedding it.
Exact filenames vary by release, so migrate the whole tree with the app closed. Media paths break first on moves; settings almost never do. Confirm plugin directories after any transfer.
Where Natron stores this, by platform
%APPDATA%\Natron
Qt settings root for Natron; migrate the whole tree with the app closed. Projects reference media by path, so keep footage stable and relink when drives change.
~/Library/Application Support/Natron
Same interior as Windows under Application Support. Use Go to Folder in Finder. Plugin directories need rechecking after migration since Mac paths rarely match.
~/.config/Natron
Follows XDG config home. Flatpak and distro builds may nest deeper, so check those roots when the default looks empty.
Frequently asked questions
How do I migrate Natron settings?
Copy the Natron config tree to the same OS relative spot on the new machine. Node presets and layouts travel inside. Plugin paths differ per machine, so recheck those after moving.
How do I add OpenFX plugins to Natron?
Through the in app plugin path preferences, which accept extra OpenFX directories. Restart after adding; new nodes appear in the picker without reinstalling anything.
Is the Natron layout the same everywhere?
Yes, across all three desktop OSes with the same interior. Only the platform root changes; project files (.ntp) themselves open anywhere since they reference media by path.
