Where Does HitFilm Store Projects and Autosaves?

HitFilm saves projects as .hitfilm files wherever you choose, with autosave and cache folders set in Options. Check the Auto Save path first after a crash.

Last updated

HitFilm projects are single files you place yourself on first save, so there is no fixed projects folder to memorize. The paths worth knowing are the configurable ones: autosave location, cache database, and proxy media directory, all under Options.

Crash recovery runs through autosave. It writes separate timestamped project files apart from your master, so a crash costs at most the autosave interval. Manual saves clear the autosave chain, which is why the interval setting matters more than most people think.

Where HitFilm stores this, by platform

Windows
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\HitFilm

Your .hitfilm master files live wherever you saved them. For recovery, read the Auto Save Project Path in Options and open the newest timestamped copy, then Save As immediately.

macOS
~/Documents/HitFilm

Same behavior as Windows with user chosen project locations. Set autosave and cache paths in Options. Keep proxies on fast storage for smooth previews.

Frequently asked questions

Where are HitFilm autosaves after a crash?

Open Options and read the Auto Save Project Path, then look there for timestamped copies. Autosaves only exist when the project changed since the last manual save, and manual saving clears older ones. Save first, then look, never the reverse.

Can I move the HitFilm cache off my system drive?

Yes. The cache database, cache files, and proxy media directory are all settable in Options under Cache. Point them at a fast drive with room. Relative media paths in the project file keep the project portable when folders move together.
