Where Does NcFTP Store Bookmarks and Settings?
NcFTP keeps bookmarks, prefs, macros and history in ~/.ncftp, with passwords trivially decodable inside.
Last updated
NcFTP centralizes everything under ~/.ncftp: bookmarks (hosts, dirs, logins), prefs, firewall rules, macros, trace logs and background spool files. The bookmark command writes entries; open recalls them by name.
The security footnote matters more than the layout. Saved passwords decode trivially, so treat the directory like a keyring: restrict permissions, never commit it, and prefer anonymous or key auth where possible.
Where NcFTP stores this, by platform
~/.ncftp/
Bookmarks, prefs, firewall, macros, spool. savepw controls credential retention; bookmarks hold encoded (not encrypted) passwords.
~/.ncftp/
Same folder. zsh even completes ncftp bookmarks from it. Background transfers spool here too, so disk pressure shows up in this dir first.
Frequently asked questions
Are saved NcFTP passwords secure?
Nowhere safe: bookmarks store credentials reversibly encoded, and anyone reading the file recovers them with modest effort. Prefer key-based or anonymous logins for hosts you do not fully trust.
How do I move NcFTP settings to a new machine?
Copy the whole ~/.ncftp directory. Bookmarks, prefs, firewall rules and macros travel together; permissions survive the copy if you preserve them.
