Where Does NetNewsWire Store Feeds and Data?
Where NetNewsWire keeps account databases on Mac, what each account folder holds, and the old path change.
Last updated
NetNewsWire keeps every account in its own folder with a SQLite database, subscriptions file, and settings plist. Since version 6 the app is sandboxed, so the whole tree lives inside its Containers directory rather than plain Application Support. Local accounts use an OnMyMac name while synced ones use UUIDs.
That container path is long but stable, and each account folder stands alone for backup purposes. The iOS app mirrors the same layout in its own sandbox. Old version 5 guides show the pre-sandbox path, which no longer applies to current installs.
Where NetNewsWire stores this, by platform
~/Library/Containers/com.ranchero.NetNewsWire-Evergreen/Data/Library/Application Support/NetNewsWire/Accounts
Per-account folders with DB.sqlite3, Subscriptions.opml, and settings. OnMyMac holds local feeds; UUID folders hold synced accounts. Quit the app before copying. The iOS app mirrors this structure inside its own sandbox container.
Frequently asked questions
how do I move NetNewsWire to a new Mac
Copy the Accounts folder to the new machine at the matching container path with the app closed. Each account folder carries its own DB.sqlite3 plus subscriptions OPML. iCloud accounts resync anyway, but On My Mac data only travels by copy.
how do I export starred articles
Query DB.sqlite3 with the sqlite3 CLI for starred rows in the statuses table. Copy the database to temp first and open read-only to protect the live file. The Account Stats window shows sizes when you only need totals, not rows.
why do guides show two different paths
Version 5 used the plain Application Support path, while version 6 moved everything into the sandbox container. Old guides pointing at ~/Library/Application Support/NetNewsWire describe the pre-sandbox era. Current installs always use the Containers tree.
