Where Does RSS Guard Store Feeds and Settings?

RSS Guard keeps everything in one user-data folder: config plus a SQLite database.db, relocatable and portable.

Last updated

RSS Guard stores settings and articles together in a single user-data folder, which is why moving machines is a copy of one directory. Inside sits config.ini and a database subfolder with database.db holding every feed and read state. MariaDB users are the exception. Their articles live on the server instead.

Windows also offers a portable mode: if a data5 folder sits beside the exe and no installed config exists, RSS Guard uses that. Check Help, About application, Resources to see exactly which folder your copy is using before you back anything up.

Where RSS Guard stores this, by platform

Windows
%LOCALAPPDATA%\RSS Guard <version>\data

Non-portable home, for example RSS Guard 5\data. The SQLite file is database\database.db inside it. Portable installs use a data5 folder next to rssguard.exe instead. Confirm yours under Help > About application > Resources.

Linux
~/.config/RSS Guard <version>/

Same layout as Windows, for example RSS Guard 4 or RSS Guard 5. Copy the whole folder with the app closed to migrate. Version 4 databases do not open in version 5, so export OPML before upgrading across majors.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move RSS Guard to a new computer?

Copy the entire user-data folder to the same location on the new machine with RSS Guard closed. Feeds, read states, and settings travel together for SQLite setups. MariaDB users only need config.ini, since articles stay on the database server.

Should I use SQLite or MariaDB?

SQLite needs no setup and suits a single machine. MariaDB suits sharing one article store between several computers, though instances must not access it simultaneously. Pick the backend in Settings, Data storage before adding feeds.
