Where Are Nuclear Throne Save Files Located?
Where Nuclear Throne keeps its single editable save on Windows, Mac and Linux, and why Cloud fights edits.
Last updated
Nuclear Throne keeps one plain text save file in the user location for each OS. Windows uses Local app data. Mac uses Application Support with a bundle style name. Linux uses the user config home.
The text format invites hand editing, but Steam Cloud overwrites local changes unless paused. Mac builds gained a randomly prefixed folder variant after one update, so check every Application Support match when the classic path looks empty. Crown and mutation unlocks live in the same sav, so one file covers all.
Where Nuclear Throne stores this, by platform
%LOCALAPPDATA%\nuclearthrone\nuclearthrone.sav
Single plain text save in a lowercase folder. Editable by hand with the game closed. Pause Steam Cloud or edits revert on launch.
~/Library/Application Support/com.vlambeer.nuclearthrone/nuclearthrone.sav
Same save under the bundle style support path. Later builds may prefix the folder randomly, so check all matches. Reveal Library with Option Go.
~/.config/nuclearthrone/nuclearthrone.sav
Same save under the user config home. Plain text and hand editable. Close the game before editing.
Frequently asked questions
My Nuclear Throne save edits never stick. Why?
Disable Steam Cloud first, then edit the plain text save with the game closed. Cloud re downloads the old copy over local edits on launch otherwise. Keep a backup of the original until the edited run loads.
Which Nuclear Throne file is the live save?
The live file is the plain sav without any suffix in the folder from this post. Backup suffixed copies sit beside it but never load. Check timestamps to confirm which file the game just wrote.
