Where Are Windows Setup and Sysprep Logs?
Windows first-boot setup state lives in the Panther folder, with Sysprep logs beside the generalize tools.
Last updated
Out-of-box setup and Sysprep generalize phases log to Panther folders: one for the OS setup flow, one beside the Sysprep tools for imaging work.
Failed captures and deployments almost always name their cause in these files. Generalize errors, unattend mistakes, and driver problems leave distinct signatures that deployment docs quote verbatim. Copy both folders before retrying, since a new run overwrites the evidence.
Where Windows stores this, by platform
C:\Windows\Panther
Setup-phase logs (setupact.log, setuperr.log). Copy before retrying a failed install; new attempts overwrite the evidence.
C:\Windows\System32\Sysprep\Panther
Generalize-phase logs beside the Sysprep tools. Imaging and capture failures explain themselves here first.
Frequently asked questions
My captured image fails to deploy. Which log do I read?
Read setupact.log in Panther for the narrative and the Sysprep Panther copy for generalize-phase errors. Imaging failures name their cause in one of the two.
