Where Does Open Camera Save Photos?

Open Camera saves to DCIM OpenCamera on internal storage by default, with SD card saves via Storage Access Framework.

Last updated

Open Camera defaults to a subfolder of DCIM on internal storage. On Android 10 and later the picker only offers DCIM children unless Storage Access Framework is enabled. That restriction surprises people moving from old builds with free choice folders.

SD cards need the Framework switch under More camera controls. Enable it, pick the card folder through the system picker, and confirm. The gallery button thumbnail always reflects the current target, so glance at it after switching locations.

Where OpenCamera stores this, by platform

Android
/storage/emulated/0/DCIM/OpenCamera

Change it in Settings and More camera controls and Save location. For SD cards enable Use Storage Access Framework first. Debug files for panoramas sit in Android/data/net.sourceforge.opencamera/files.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Open Camera say failed to save photo?

The target folder is unreachable or the Framework grant lapsed. Reset the save location to DCIM OpenCamera, re grant card access, and reboot. Custom paths outside DCIM need the Framework enabled on Android 10 and up.

Can Open Camera save outside DCIM?

Only with Storage Access Framework turned on, which opens the system folder picker including cloud providers. Without it, Android 10 and later resets custom paths back into DCIM automatically.
