Where Does OpenRA Store Settings and Maps?
Where OpenRA keeps settings.yaml, maps, replays, and downloaded content on every desktop OS.
Last updated
OpenRA keeps a support directory per OS with settings.yaml at the top plus maps, replays, logs, and downloaded campaign content underneath. One folder holds the lot, which keeps backups painless.
Very old installs used different roots (Documents on Windows, ~/.openra on Linux). Current builds use AppData and .config paths below but still read the old ones in some cases. Check both if files seem missing after years away.
Where OpenRA stores this, by platform
%APPDATA%\OpenRA\
Holds settings.yaml, maps/, replays, logs, and Content/. Portable mode: create a Support folder beside the game exe to redirect everything there.
~/Library/Application Support/OpenRA/
Same settings.yaml plus maps and replays layout. Hidden by default; use Go, Go to Folder in Finder.
~/.config/openra/
Same layout (settings.yaml, maps/, Content/). Snap installs nest this under ~/snap/openra/<id>/.config/openra/. Older installs used ~/.openra/.
Frequently asked questions
How do I migrate OpenRA to a new PC?
Copy the whole support folder (settings.yaml, maps, replays, content) to the matching path on the new machine. Old installs before playtest-20190825 used Documents or ~/.openra instead, so check there if the new folder looks empty.
Can I make OpenRA portable?
Create a folder named Support inside the OpenRA install folder and run the game. Everything (settings, maps, replays) redirects there. Useful for USB sticks or shared machines.
