Where Does OpenTracks Store Recordings?
OpenTracks keeps recordings in its private database and exports GPX, KMZ, or CSV to a folder you choose.
Last updated
OpenTracks records into its own private database while you move: a SQLite database.db under /data/data/de.dennisguse.opentracks, plus marker photos beside it. Nothing browsable appears until you export. Export writes standard GPX, KML, or KMZ files wherever you send them, and the developers call one exported KMZ the best backup.
Check the export directory in settings before a trip, not after. Uninstalling wipes the private database, so unexported tracks die with the app. Exported files are plain standards based formats that any fitness or map tool reads.
Where OpenTracks stores this, by platform
Your chosen export folder (*.gpx, *.kmz, *.csv)
Set and verify it in OpenTracks settings before recording. Live recordings sit in app-private storage until exported. Copy exported files to a PC for safekeeping. Markers and photos export alongside when included.
Frequently asked questions
How do I back up OpenTracks recordings?
Export each track to GPX or KMZ into your chosen folder, then copy that folder off the phone. There is no file level access to the live database, so export is the backup. Do it before uninstalling or wiping.
OpenTracks shows my track but I can't find the file. Why?
It only exists inside the app's private database until exported. Open the track, export it to GPX or KMZ, and check your export folder setting. The file appears there, not before.
