Where Does PCSX2 Store Memory Cards?

PCSX2 memory card and savestate folders on Windows, macOS and Linux, and which .ps2 files to back up per game.

Last updated

PCSX2 emulates PS2 memory cards as .ps2 files in a memcards folder, usually Mcd001.ps2 and Mcd002.ps2. Every game on the same card shares those two files. Savestates sit apart in a sstates folder and depend on the exact emulator version.

If the folder is a mystery, use Settings > Memory Cards > Browse inside PCSX2 to jump straight there. Back up the .ps2 files with the emulator closed. Folder memory cards store saves as loose files instead, which some players prefer for per game sorting. Qt nightly builds moved settings but kept the memcards folder name unchanged.

Where PCSX2 stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Users\[Username]\Documents\PCSX2\memcards

Savestates are in Documents\PCSX2\sstates next door. Portable builds keep both under the exe folder instead. Copy Mcd001.ps2 and Mcd002.ps2 to back up all card saves.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/PCSX2/memcards

Same internal layout as Windows. Use Go > Go to Folder in Finder. Nightly Qt builds moved here from older Application Support/pcsx2 spellings.

Linux
~/.config/PCSX2/memcards

Enable Show Hidden Files to see .config. AppImage and Flatpak builds may use ~/.var/app/net.pcsx2.PCSX2/config/PCSX2 instead, so check there if empty.

Frequently asked questions

Can I copy a single game off a PCSX2 memory card?

Use the MyMC or mymcplus tool to extract one entry from the .ps2 file. Simpler: keep one memory card file per game (Mcd-FinalFantasy.ps2) and copy that whole file as your backup.

Do PCSX2 savestates replace memory card saves?

No. Savestates freeze the emulator and break across versions. Always save at an in game memory card point too, then back up the .ps2 file for anything you care about.
