Where Does pkgx Store Packages and Cache?
pkgx downloads packages into $PKGX_DIR or ~/.pkgx, with caches in the OS cache dir. One env var moves it all.
Last updated
pkgx centers downloads in one root folder. Packages land in $PKGX_DIR when set, otherwise ~/.pkgx on most systems with a couple of platform twists. Cache data sits apart in the OS cache directory.
That split decides cleanup. Deleting the root removes every tool while dotfiles and project configs survive. Set PKGX_DIR on shared machines or cramped home drives before the first run. Cache clears independently when disk runs low.
Where pkgx stores this, by platform
~/.pkgx
Package installs here unless PKGX_DIR points elsewhere. Cache sits in ~/.cache/pkgx. Set PKGX_DIR before first install to relocate everything.
~/.pkgx
Same root layout as Linux with cache in ~/Library/Caches/pkgx. The ~/Library/Packages shortcut applies only when that folder already exists.
%LOCALAPPDATA%\pkgx
Cache home for pkgx on Windows. Package root follows the same PKGX_DIR rule. Keep both on fast local disk for best run times.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find my real pkgx folders?
Run pkgx --help or check the FAQ paths for your OS. Packages live under the pkgx root while caches sit in the system cache dir. Set PKGX_DIR before installing anything to keep one layout across machines.
How do I fully uninstall pkgx?
Delete ~/.pkgx to drop every package, plus the cache dir for your OS. Project pantry files and scripts stay untouched, since pkgx separates runnable tools from your code. Reinstalls rehydrate on next run.
