Where Does Hubstaff Store Settings and Config?

Hubstaff desktop prefs live in the app UI, with CLI config in per-OS config.toml files on every install.

Last updated

Hubstaff splits settings two ways. The desktop timer keeps preferences in its own UI under General and Data Collection tabs. The CLI tool reads a config.toml from the OS config directory, overridable with XDG_CONFIG_HOME.

Tracked screenshots and activity live on Hubstaff servers, not in local files. Local config holds API endpoints, tokens and org defaults. Back up the CLI config for scripted setups. Desktop prefs need no file backup since servers hold the history.

Where Hubstaff stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\hubstaff\config.toml (desktop prefs in-app)

CLI config.toml under the OS config dir. Desktop prefs in the tray menu UI. Tracked data lives on servers. Scope config dir per CI run for automation.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/hubstaff/config.toml (desktop prefs in-app)

CLI config under Application Support hubstaff folder. Desktop prefs in the menu UI. Same server-side history as other platforms.

Linux
~/.config/hubstaff/config.toml (desktop prefs in-app)

CLI config under XDG config home. Desktop prefs in the app UI. Override dir with XDG_CONFIG_HOME for scripts and CI.

Frequently asked questions

How do I script Hubstaff CLI access?

Set the config dir per run with XDG_CONFIG_HOME, then set-pat with your token. JSON output pipes to jq for scripts. Exit codes separate API, auth, config and network failures.

Where are Hubstaff tracking prefs?

Open Preferences from the tray menu and use General plus Data Collection tabs. Startup, window display and screenshot notices live there. Screenshot and activity history stays on Hubstaff servers.
