Where Does Premiere Pro Save Auto-Saves?
Where Premiere Pro puts its Adobe Premiere Pro Auto-Save folder, why recent versions save beside the project, and how to check the real path.
Last updated
Premiere Pro auto-saves copies of your open project every five minutes by default and keeps the last twenty versions. The interval and the count live under Edit > Preferences > Auto Save on Windows, Premiere Pro > Settings > Auto Save on a Mac.
The folder is always named Adobe Premiere Pro Auto-Save. Where it lands is a per-project setting: File > Project Settings > Scratch Disks, Project Auto Save. Recent versions ship that on Same as Project, so the folder is created beside your .prproj file, and with the default new project location that resolves to Documents\Adobe\Premiere Pro\<version>\Adobe Premiere Pro Auto-Save.
Where Adobe Premiere Pro stores this, by platform
C:\Users\[Username]\Documents\Adobe\Premiere Pro\[version]\Adobe Premiere Pro Auto-Save
[version] is a release folder such as 22, 24.0 or 25.0, one per Premiere version, so the folder you need changes when you upgrade. Projects saved somewhere else keep their auto-saves next to the .prproj instead. The New Project dialog shows the path in its Scratch Disks tab, and File > Project Settings > Scratch Disks shows it for a project that is already open.
~/Documents/Adobe/Premiere Pro/[version]/Adobe Premiere Pro Auto-Save
Same structure as Windows, starting at your home folder. If iCloud Drive's Desktop and Documents sync is switched on, the real files sit under ~/Library/Mobile Documents/com~apple~CloudDocs/Documents/Adobe/Premiere Pro/ and macOS mirrors them into Documents. File > Project Settings > Scratch Disks still shows where the open project points.
Frequently asked questions
Where are my Premiere Pro auto-saves?
Open File > Project Settings > Scratch Disks and read the Project Auto Save line. On Same as Project the folder is next to your .prproj; on a custom path it is wherever that points, often Documents\Adobe\Premiere Pro\[version]\Adobe Premiere Pro Auto-Save.
How many auto-saves does Premiere Pro keep?
By default it saves every five minutes and keeps twenty versions, with the oldest dropping off as new ones arrive. Both numbers are editable in Preferences > Auto Save, along with an option to save the current working project as well.
Can I move the auto-save folder somewhere else?
Yes, per project: File > Project Settings > Scratch Disks, then set Project Auto Save to Same as Project or a custom folder. The choice applies to that project only, so bake it into a template project if you want it on every job.
