Where Does Project64 Store Save Files?

Project64 splits native saves and save states into settable folders. The default Save subfolder and the settings behind it.

Last updated

Project64 keeps two save kinds. Native saves mimic the cart chip and use extensions like .eep, .sra, and .fla. Instant saves are numbered state slots. Both default to the Save subfolder inside your Project64 install.

The paths are settable. Options, then Settings, then Directories exposes a Native Save folder and an Instant Save folder. Filenames follow the ROM internal name, so Mario 64 style names like SUPER MARIO 64.eep are normal.

Where Project64 stores this, by platform

Windows
%ProgramFiles%\Project64\Save

Defaults to <install>\Save for both save kinds. Change it under Options, Settings, Directories. Filenames track the ROM internal name plus the chip extension, so keep the ROM name stable.

Frequently asked questions

how do i change the project64 save folder

Open Options, then Settings, then Directories. Set the Native Save and Instant Save folders there. That is the supported move; dragging files by hand without updating those paths just orphans them.

what is the difference between native and instant saves

Save states are snapshots with a slot number in the name. Native saves mimic the cart chip (.eep, .sra, .fla) and load on real hardware tools. Keep both if you care about a playthrough; states are brittle across versions.
