Where Are Red Dead Redemption 2 Save Files Located?
Red Dead Redemption 2 save and profile paths for Rockstar and Steam installs on Windows, and where Proton keeps them on Linux.
Last updated
Red Dead Redemption 2 stores saves under Documents/Rockstar Games/Red Dead Redemption 2/Profiles, inside a subfolder named with a random profile ID. Both the Rockstar Launcher and Steam versions use that tree. Settings files sit nearby in the same parent folder.
Cloud sync and multiple Windows accounts cause most lost save reports. The game reads the profile folder for the current Windows user only. Copy the whole Profiles folder when migrating, not single files. Keep the game closed during the copy to avoid half written saves.
Where Red Dead Redemption 2 stores this, by platform
C:\Users\[Username]\Documents\Rockstar Games\Red Dead Redemption 2\Profiles\[ProfileID]
The [ProfileID] folder name is random per user. Settings live in nearby Settings files. Back up the whole Red Dead Redemption 2 folder to catch saves plus graphics prefs.
~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/1174180/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Documents/Rockstar Games/Red Dead Redemption 2/Profiles
Proton path for AppID 1174180. Rockstar Launcher installs outside Steam use a different prefix, so search for Profiles under your Wine or Proton prefix if this misses.
Frequently asked questions
Why do my RDR2 saves disappear on a second Windows account?
Each Windows user gets a separate Documents tree and profile ID. Log in as the original user and copy its Profiles folder into the same location on the new account with the game closed.
Can I back up RDR2 progress manually?
Yes. Close the game, then copy the Red Dead Redemption 2 folder from Documents/Rockstar Games. That captures saves and settings together. Restore by placing it back before launching.
