Where Is the rEFInd Config File?
Where rEFInd keeps its main config and kernel options on Linux, and how the ESP mount changes the path.
Last updated
rEFInd keeps its main config inside the EFI system partition under the vendor directory. Display, timeout and menu entries all live in that one file. Kernel parameters for auto detected loaders sit in a sibling options file.
The host visible path shifts with the ESP mount convention per distro, which breaks absolute path guides. Resolve the mount before editing anything. The manager never touches Linux root files, so system updates cannot overwrite menu choices. Theme files sit beside the config, so copy the vendor folder whole.
Where rEFInd stores this, by platform
/boot/efi/EFI/refind/refind.conf
Main config plus kernel options sibling on the EFI partition. Host path depends on the ESP mount: efi, boot or boot efi. Resolve the mount first.
Frequently asked questions
Is my rEFInd config under efi, boot or boot efi?
Resolve the live ESP mount first with the boot control print command or a filesystem table listing. Distros mount the same partition at efi, boot or boot efi by convention. Prefix the EFI refind path with that mount to get the working location.
Where do I set kernel boot options for rEFInd?
Edit the kernel options file beside the main config to set shared boot parameters once. Per entry stanzas in the main config override those defaults. Keep a fallback entry so one bad kernel line never strands the machine.
