Where Does the reMarkable Desktop App Store Notes?

Where the reMarkable desktop app keeps synced notebooks on Windows and macOS, and which folder to back up.

Last updated

The reMarkable desktop app mirrors what is on your tablet, so the local copy lives in a desktop folder inside the app data directory. On Macs installed from the App Store that directory sits inside the sandboxed Containers path. Windows keeps it under Roaming in your user profile.

Back up the whole desktop folder with the app closed. The files use UUID names without readable titles, so a partial copy is hard to verify. Signing in on a new machine and syncing from the cloud is easier than hand merging folders, and the local copy is mostly useful for offline access and quick restores.

Where reMarkable stores this, by platform

Windows
%appdata%\remarkable\desktop

Synced notebooks and PDFs live in the desktop subfolder. Paste the path into Explorer. Close the app before copying, or files may be locked mid sync.

macOS
~/Library/Containers/com.remarkable.desktop/Data/Library/Application Support/remarkable/desktop

App Store installs use the Containers path because of sandboxing. A direct download from reMarkable uses ~/Library/Application Support/remarkable/desktop instead. Check both if the first one is empty.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move reMarkable notes to a new computer?

Copy the desktop folder to the same location with the app closed on both machines, then sign in and let it sync. Keep the tablet online too, since the cloud copy resolves conflicts. The raw files use UUID names, so rely on the app UI to verify rather than opening them directly.

Why do guides show two different Mac paths?

The App Store build is sandboxed under Containers, while a direct download uses the plain Application Support path. If a guide path does not match your Mac, check the other location first. Both hold the same desktop folder structure once synced.
