Where Does GDevelop Save Projects and Game Data?

GDevelop saves editor projects as .json plus assets locally or cloud, with desktop game saves in per game storage folders.

Last updated

GDevelop projects are a .json file plus a resource folder when saved locally, or cloud and Drive copies when saved online. Desktop File then Save as then Save to Computer (or Download a copy in browser) produces the portable form. The .json alone without art is not a complete backup.

Exported desktop games persist with Storage actions into per game Local Storage leveldb trees. That path includes the game name from project properties. Web builds use browser storage instead, which clears with site data. Back up both the source project and the player save tree.

Where GDevelop stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\[Game-Name]\Local Storage\leveldb

Editor projects (.json plus assets) live wherever you saved or downloaded them, plus GDevelop Cloud. Replace [Game-Name] with the title in game properties. Close the game before copying saves.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/[Game-Name]/Local Storage/leveldb

Same per game pattern as Windows. Linux uses ~/.config/[Game-Name]/Local Storage/leveldb. Keep resource folders beside the .json or exports miss art and audio.

Linux
~/.config/[Game-Name]/Local Storage/leveldb

Editor available for Linux with the same cloud and local project options. File system actions only run in desktop exports, not mobile or web builds.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my GDevelop project just a .json file?

Local projects split logic (.json) from art and audio files beside it. Zip the folder with resources for a real backup. Cloud projects bundle differently, so download a copy before major refactors.

Where do exported GDevelop games keep saves?

In the per game Local Storage leveldb folder above on desktop. Clear that tree to reset progress. Browser previews use devtools Application storage which vanishes with site data.
