Where Does Roam Research Store Graphs?

Roam graphs live in the cloud with local IndexedDB cache, exported as Markdown or JSON for archives.

Last updated

Roam Research keeps graphs in the cloud under your account. The desktop and mobile apps are views onto that hosted database, with a local browser cache for speed.

The portable copy is the graph export in Markdown or JSON from the app menu. That file holds pages, blocks, and references as plain text. The local cache is disposable and rebuilds on login, so never mistake it for a backup.

Where Roam Research stores this, by platform

Windows
Account cloud (graphs); Markdown/JSON export

Pages, blocks, and references sync from the account. Export Markdown or JSON from the menu for archives; local browser and app caches rebuild on their own.

macOS
Account cloud (graphs); Markdown/JSON export

Same cloud-first design. Keep exported files outside the browser profile if graphs matter long term.

Linux
Account cloud (graphs); Markdown/JSON export

Same export story on Linux. The cache under the browser or Electron profile is temporary; the export is the archive.

Frequently asked questions

How do I back up my Roam graph?

Export the graph as Markdown or JSON from the menu first. The export is the only portable copy; the local cache rebuilds itself and is not an archive.
