Where Does Capacities Store Offline Data?

Capacities keeps your notes in an internal offline database, not plain files. Where the desktop app data lives and how to get a real export.

Last updated

Capacities downloads all your notes to the device after login, so search and editing keep working offline. The catch is the format. Notes live in the app's internal database, not as Markdown files in a folder you can browse. The browser version works the same way, with everything in browser storage.

That means the app-data folder below is useful for troubleshooting space, not for reading notes. For portable copies, use Settings > Export. You can automate local Markdown exports of whole spaces, which land in your Downloads folder or a folder you pick.

Where Capacities stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\Capacities

Internal database and cached media. Logging out wipes the local copy, so export first. If disk space bites, check this folder's size before deleting anything.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/Capacities

Same internal storage as Windows. Reach it with Go > Go to Folder in Finder. Your durable copy comes from Settings > Export, not from copying this folder.

Frequently asked questions

Are my Capacities notes stored as Markdown files?

No. Capacities stores objects in its own database format, which folders of Markdown files can't represent. Automated exports convert everything to Markdown with front matter and CSV collections for use elsewhere.

How do I keep an offline copy of a Capacities space?

Open Settings > Export and pick the spaces, frequency and destination. The desktop app asks where to save, or drops the export in Downloads. Exports include media you already downloaded to the device.
