Where Are Windows Roaming Profiles Stored?

Roaming profiles follow users as versioned folders on the server, synced to each machine at logon.

Last updated

Roaming profiles copy the user profile to a server share at logoff and back at logon, so settings follow people between machines. Each Windows generation uses its own versioned folder suffix.

That versioning is the classic gotcha. A .V6 profile and a .V2 profile are separate worlds, and mismatched clients silently build parallel profiles. Slow logons usually mean a bloated profile syncing gigabytes; exclude caches and downloads from roaming to fix most of it.

Where Windows stores this, by platform

Windows
\\Server\Profiles\[User].V6 (versioned share)

Server-side profile copies, one versioned folder per Windows generation. Match the suffix to the client OS; exclude caches to fix slow logons.

Frequently asked questions

Settings follow some users but not others. Why?

Check the profile version suffix first: .V6, .V2, and unversioned folders belong to different Windows generations. Point the user at the right one or settings split across folders.
