Where Does RPG Maker Store Projects and Saves?

RPG Maker keeps editor projects in Documents Games by default, with finished game saves using .rpgsave files per title.

Last updated

RPG Maker MV and MZ default new projects into a Games folder under Documents. That whole project folder (game.rmmzproject plus data, audio, img) is the game. Copy it to back up. The editor asks for location on New Project, so veterans often move work to a dev drive.

Finished games save separately. Browser and desktop builds write .rpgsave slots, often under AppData Local plus the game title on Windows. Web exports use browser local storage instead. Keep project folders and playtest saves apart when sharing builds.

Where RPG Maker stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Users\[Username]\Documents\Games\[Project]

Playtest saves commonly in %LOCALAPPDATA%\[GameTitle] as file1.rpgsave and up. VX Ace titles differ. Back up the project folder plus any save folder before engine updates.

macOS
User-chosen project folder (default Documents area)

Exact path may vary by version and store build, check File and Open Project path if this does not match. Exported Mac builds keep saves in app support or local storage per export type.

Frequently asked questions

Where are RPG Maker MV playtest saves?

In a Local AppData folder named for the game title, as numbered .rpgsave files. Copy those alongside the project folder to preserve test progress across machines.

How do I back up an RPG Maker project?

Copy the entire project folder chosen at creation, including game project file and data subfolder. That carries maps, database, and plugins. Saves from testers live elsewhere and need separate copies.
